Aldactone which is also known as Spironolactone is an anti-androgen. It is also known as spiro and is not only effective on acne but also on the hair, scalp, skin and body hair. It reduces the growth of hair. This pill works by blocking the production of androgen thereby reducing the production of oil. It also blocks the formation of androgen hormone leading to prevention of the formation of acne.
It also helps in controlling high blood pressure yet it can even cause low blood pressure. However, before using this drug for the treatment of acne, you must consult a dermatologist as it has certain side effects.
Some of the common side effects associated with this drug are headache, breast tenderness, increase fertility, increase urination and irregular menstruation. You can reduce these effects either by taking birth control pills or by discontinuing the pills for a week after every month. It may also cause serious side effects such as increased potassium level in those with kidney problems. Though this occurs rarely but if you experience any such symptoms then it is suggested that you consult your doctor immediately.
If you are on this pill then it is suggested that you drink lots of water to avoid dehydration, drink milk in order to avoid upset stomach and avoid taking salt, salt substitutes or any other thing that contains high level of potassium. Though taking this pill increases fertility but try to avoid having it as the baby could be born with defects. And yes, since the side effects can be diminished as compared to the positive effects, it is suggested to get yourself checked every 2-3 months by your doctor.
