Types of Steroids and Their Side Effects

As far as the types of steroids are concerned, there are a number of them from which you can choose.  A number of people, especially athletes, have relied on different types of steroids to build their body and to enhance their performance. 

The term steroid is typically referred to the fat soluble organic compound that occurs naturally in the adrenal glands of the body. Its synthetic form can also be derived. The synthetic form of steroid can be classified into three types namely, androgenic steroids, anabolic steroids and corticosteroids. 

Types of Steroids and Their Side Effects

Androgenic Steroids

Androgenic steroids are responsible for the growth of the male characteristics and the maintenance of the male reproductive organs. Androgens are often used for medical purposes such as for the treatment of breast cancer, testosterone deficiency, weight gain, growth stimulation, to increase red blood cells and other medical conditions. Androgenic steroids are also referred to as anabolic steroids as it helps in promoting lean muscle growth.

It can also be used for the treatment of hereditary angioema, aplastic anemia, vascular manifestations of Bechet’s disease and also helps in reducing the itching sensation of chronic biliary obstruction. This steroid is sometimes used illegally as a performance enhancing drug.

Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic is derived from the Greek word which means to ‘build up’. Anabolic steroids are popularly known as juice, hype, Arnolds, gym candy etc among the youths. It was developed in the late 1930’s for the treatment of hypogonadism, a condition where the testis fails to produce adequate testosterone. This is a condition in which normal growth, development and sexual functioning is disrupted. Anabolic steroids were originally used for the treatment of delayed puberty, impotency and wasting that is caused by HIV infection.

However, with the scientist discovering that this particular can be used for the development of skeletal muscles, body builders and weight lifters began to use it. Though using anabolic steroids without a prescription is illegal but there are food supplements that can be bought legally.

Corticosteroids

This type of steroid is those associated with the adrenal cortex. They are man made steroids which imitates the functions of the cortisone hormones. These steroids are different from the anabolic steroids. It helps in dealing with inflammation and is also produced within the body naturally. It helps in the reduction of itchiness; rashes etc. and are found in the form of ointment, spray and creams. It is also used for the treatment of diseases such as asthma, eczema, arthritis, colitis, kidney diseases, allergies etc.

Side Effects of Steroids

Steroids are medically used for the treatment of a large number of diseases. It has been used for a number of purpose but not without any side effects. 

However the dangerous side effects can be controlled to a certain extent is used under the recommendation of a doctor. Otherwise an extra dosage of steroid can result into a number of short term as well as long term side effects. The short term side effects are reversible once the intake of steroids is discontinued. 

But the long term side effects are irreversible. 

Some of the short side effects that must be taken care of are acne, increased hair growths on the body and the face, increased sexual drive, aggressiveness, etc. These side effects may be reversible once you discontinue the use of steroids. But serious side effects such as clitoris enlargement, shrunken testis, impotency, infertility, heart diseases, kidney diseases, formation of cancer etc may be difficult to reverse and are rather permanent side effects that lasts a lifetime.
