Depending on how anabolic steroid is administered into the body, the type of anabolic steroids may be classified. Anabolic steroids are also known as anabolic-androgenic steroids or AAS. This type of steroid is most commonly used by the athletes and youths in order to develop their muscle mass and increase production of testosterone. The term anabolic is derived from Greek which means to build up. The main purpose of developing the drug in the early 1930’s was to treat a condition called hypogonadism. It was earlier used for the medical treatment of delayed puberty, impotency and other diseases.

Anabolic steroid, depending on how it is being given to the body, may be classified into four types namely, oral, injectable, nasal sprays and transdermal.
Of these four types of steroids, the most commonly used are oral and injectable anabolic treatments.
Oral Anabolic Steroids
Oral anabolic steroids are taken in the form of pills. And typically it does not at all require any professional medical help. Athletes using steroids for the first experience with the pills as it is easy and does not take much time to pop in a pill. It also acts faster than any other type of anabolic steroids and is convenient. However, oral steroids cause more severe side effects than any of the steroids. Yet most of the athletes tend to continue using oral pills even after starting to use injections inorder to escape the drug detection test. The oral steroid tends to remain for a shorter period of time in the body as compare to the injectables.
Injectable Anabolic Steroids
As compared to the oral pills, injectables are slow acting steroids and they are better tolerated by the body than their counterparts. The injectables are slowly injected to the muscles and not to the veins which later on releases slowly into other parts of the money and may remain for months that might lead to the detection of the steroid even after having used it a couple of months ago.
Buttocks, outer thighs and shoulder are the main areas where the steroid is injected. However there are some people who inject in the chest biceps and triceps as well which is quite risky. When using injectables, it has been recommended to consult a qualified doctor.
Nasal spray and transdermal are the two less common types of anabolic steroids. Transdermal is the topical application of the steroids in the form of cream onto the skin whereas nasal spray is commonly used by asthma patients.
Just like the oral pills, you don’t need a doctor to direct you on how to use a transdermal steroid. For using nasal spray, it is a must to consult the doctor for the correct dose. Anabolic steroids are illegal to buy without a doctor’s prescription however; there are a number of steroid supplements available which can be bought legally.
