No evidence supports that ultra-high doses of steroids alone can develop muscle growth through a chemical effect. Though, intake of steroids along with rigorous physical training and a high protein diet enhances muscle growth. Anabolic steroids act on the balance between anabolic and catabolic processes within the body. Anabolism is the process through which simple substances are converted to more complex compounds, such as bone and muscle tissue. Catabolism is the corresponding destructive process that breaks down these complex compounds for removal from the body.
The normal body will attempt to maintain a balance between these two processes as they carry out tissue renewal and replacement. Without the use of anabolic steroids, muscle mass is built up very slowly after long periods of rigorous training. There are evidences that show anabolic steroids encouraging athletes to feel like working out more often and more vigorously. This psychological effect may be more important than any direct chemical effect. The increased incidence of connective tissue injuries associated with steroid abuse is the result of frequent and more vigorous workouts.
The risk of serious side effects is increased as the athlete takes higher and higher doses of anabolic steroids. The effects of anabolic steroids on physical performance are unclear. 2) Hallucinations, hearing voices, schizophrenia, and mental disorders
3) Yellow tint to skin, jaundice, and chronic hepatitis

5) Acne, rashes, hives
6) Severe depression and suicidal tendencies
7) Increased size of heart, liver, kidneys
8) Increased cholesterol count and blood pressure
9) Suppress immune system and retard healing
10) Bone deterioration.
Several studies have shown conflicting results. Studies that show beneficial results draw the conclusion that the body weight increases by approximately 4 pounds. However, most of the studies have failed to support the beneficial effect on maximal oxygen consumption or endurance capacity. However, the gains made by athletes in uncontrolled observations have been much more impressive. Such case studies lack credibility as there are no records about it.
The use of various physical and chemical aids in performance enhancement has been a feature of athletic competition since the beginning of recorded history.
