Of late obesity has been on the rapid rise in the United States. Obesity simply refers to excess weight deposit around the waistline area. Some of us often tend to confuse the two term obesity and overweight and concludes that the two terms refers to the same thing. However, being overweight and being obese are two different things. Being overweight means you are slightly heavier or healthier than you ought to whereas obesity is a disease which can give rise to many other diseases. Majority of the people in America, both children and adults alike, are victims of obesity. According to statistics, two-third of the American population is either obese or overweight.
Latest researches have pointed out the fact that obesity can give rise to many other diseases such as hypertension, hip and knee problems, diabetes, heart attack etc. As per records, about 3 in 10 Americans suffer from hypertension.
According to a 1999-2004 survey, about 28.9% people in US suffer from high blood pressure. The study has also found that about 36.1% people are at risk for developing hypertension. High blood pressure has the risk of developing heart attack, stroke and other serious conditions. The only way to treat hypertension is to prevent as the treatment is far from ideal.
In women, the risk of hypertension increases by the time they are 40 and in men the risk is higher by the time they reach 60. There is a close link between cancer and obesity or we can say simply that obesity causes cancer which very few women are aware of it. It has been noted that women who are overweight are four times at higher risk to develop cancer of the uterine lining. The mortality rate of those suffering from cancer is also increased of being overweight. It has been recorded those who are overweight and heavier are 6.25% times more likely to die from the disease. According to an investigation by Soliman and her colleagues, it was found that only 42% of women knew that obesity can lead to endometrial cancer.
Another risk for women who are obese is that they are likely to suffer from breast cancer. A close link has been found between obesity and breast cancer.
Studies are still on to find out how thee two are linked though no breakthrough has been made so far. The American Cancer society has estimated that about 182,500 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer and about 40,480 will die from the disease. Studies have revealed that the higher the body mass index (BMI) of the person higher is the risk for developing cancer. It has also been found that obesity also increases the rise in hip and knee problem.
